Quick Thoughts from The Contender Season Premier
Well the Contender is officially back for a fourth season and after watching this season's premier episode I have a couple quick thoughts:...
POWER RANKINGS
The big winner in the NFL this week has to be the Denver Broncos. At an incredibly unimpressive 7-5, the Broncos appear to have the AFC East well in hand. They upset an overrated Jets squad as the Chargers fell to the Falcons to drop three games back in the division. The Falcons moved to 8-4, which actually puts them at third place in their own division, and still on the outside looking in when talking about the NFC playoff picture.
HOT STOVE
Following a disastrous end to his 2008 season, it was very clear that Javier Vazquez had to be moved out of the South Side.
Well the Contender is officially back for a fourth season and after watching this season's premier episode I have a couple quick thoughts:...
The Patriots may be a little Rosie-r these days, but the are also looking to Seau. The competition in the AFC East is pretty tight as the Jets continue to lead the division and the Patriots are tied with the Dolphins. Buffalo raced out the gates earlier this season to lead the AFC and now are hard pressed to make it into the playoffs, but could upset a few teams from making it through - including the Patriots. The Patriots have four games left and basically need to win them all to make it into the playoffs. Staying two weeks with games versus Seattle and Oakland on the west coast before returning to play at home versus Arizona and then the season finally in Buffalo, the Patriots have a harder schedule then most people believed at the beginning of the season. If the Patriots were to lose a game over...

As I am sure all of you hockey nuts know, Sean Avery had his hearing today with the National Hockey League regarding Tuesday's incidents. Many are wondering what the league will do. Will he get a slap on the wrist (five games)? Will he get a warning? Will he get suspended for 10-20 games? Will he be kicked out of the league for the rest of the season? Hopefully, we'll have our answers by sometime today. If you haven't been following the situation, Mr. Avery was suspended indefinitely on Tuesday due to the following comments he made to Canadian reporters after yesterday's morning skate in Calgary: "I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada," Avery said on camera this morning in Calgary. "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with...

Off to Vegas for the Winter Meetings - flickr (Christopher Chan)
After weeks of our baseball lives sustaining on rumor, innuendo, and the occasional piece of real news (the Coco Crisp trade, additions to the bullpen, Junichi Tawaza signing, arbitration), the signing of Dustin Pedroia this week marks a decided turn in the pace of news that will give color to the twenty five men who will don the Red Sox uniform on Opening Day 2009.
Enjoy the last few days of dreaming about what "might" transpire this off-season, the Winter Meetings will force teams to go "all in" with their hands in Las Vegas next week.
It's December and right on time the rumors start flying around like frisbees at a dog park.So far the Mariners have been linked to Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr., Pat Burrell, and have made available J.J Putz.Unfortunate as it is, none of the free agents we have been connected to suit us all that well. Burrell, Junior, and Dunn would all be asked to DH without a doubt, a position none of them want to play. But if they play any other position besides DH they would be costing us many runs with their below average defense. Its understandable why the Mariner are looking into these guys. Gmz wants to add power to this team and each of them has or has had power. When it comes right down to it, if the money and number of years is reasonable, then the deal should be made. Adam Dunn 3 years...

Nothing like a little Raider blow-out to make a Chargers fan feel a little better about an otherwise disappointing season. I can't exactly explain the phenomenon, but I can say that it can take any Chargers fan frown and turn it upside down. Remember when the Chargers went 1-15, with that single win coming against the Raiders? A lot of Chargers fans called that a .500 season, and almost felt content with that number-1 draft pick. Anyway, nothing like playing the Raiders to bring back the offensive punch that had gone limp, and the ferocity in the pass defense that had gone tame. Still, I'm left wondering, "Why couldn't they play like this consistently over the previous 12 games?" It's not as simple as just blaming a very bad opponent. For what seems to be the first time all season, the Chargers made significant adjustments to their...

Yes, I said it. Brewers' GM Doug Melvin should move on.Simply put, Sabathia is going to drag this out as long as he can...and, in doing so, Melvin won't be able to pursue any other free agent starting pitchers. Since only the Yankees, Giants and Angels are the Brewers' only competition, the GM's of the other 26 teams are off and running locking up starters...or getting ready to.Case in point--the Braves have already added Javier Vazquez to their rotation via trade...and are on the verge of signing the Jays' A.J. Burnett to a free agent contract. That is two fewer available options for the Brewers now...and going from the AL to a potential wild card foe.As for trading for another starter, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy seems to think that Melvin won't likely make any big deals at the Winter Meetings. I concur. McCalvy goes onto say that the Brewers would really...
Sometimes you wake up in the morning to find that your new puppy has crapped all over the floor. This is acceptable because puppies can be hard to train. When your 10 year old dog does it, you get worried because it may well mean a trip to vet to put him down. Indianapolis' old dog, Bob Kravitz did a deuce in the middle of the living room shag last night, and has left all of us to deal with the stink.Rex Kravitz, has questioned today whether or not Bob Sanders is worth the money the Colts signed him for. Bob's argument, backed by two statistics is seemingly sound. He says that the Colts have a virtually identical record with and with out the Zombie as well as posting exactly the same yards per game on D with and with him. The problem is that Kravitz is flat wrong. The win/loss stat is interesting, but not entirely relevant. Bob Sanders has routinely been used only in the biggest, toughest, most important games of the season. 2006 may seem like an easy rallying cry, but largely because it proves the point. Bob missed almost the entire season, but randomly came back for a game in the middle of the schedule. At New England. That day he had 11 tackles (8 solo) and a pick. The Colts won at the Pats, and that win gave them home field advantage for the AFC Championship game. Indy went 3-1 with the Zombie, 9-3 without him. Same winning percentage. Ah but, no one who knows anything about the 06 Colts thinks that they played the same. Most importantly, he return for the playoffs (coupled with the gelling of Rob Morris who replaced Gilbert "the Human Sieve" Gardner which Rex dutifully notes) lifted the Indy to a level where it beat three smash mouth running teams in 4 games, just a month after getting left for dead by the side of a road in Jacksonville. Because Bob is often hurt, the Colts tend to use him judiciously. When he comes back, it's because they really need him to win a game they don't feel they can without him. Hence, their record with him may look the same, but often the games he plays in are much tougher than the random date with the Bengals. (Ironically, he may play this week, but only because Brackett and Dawson's injuries, have left the Colts desperate. If everyone was healthy, it would be wise to sit Sanders and keep him fresh.)In 2007, Bob Sanders played the entire year, and managed to lift the Colts to the best defensive performance they've had for a season in a long time. He did this despite the fact that Dwight Freeney got hurt midseason AND Robert Mathis missed time. He was awarded the Defensive Player of the Year because he and Gary Brackett were the chewing gum and bailing wire that held the ship together. The only other year in recent memory that the defense was so dominant was 2005...when Bob Sanders played 14 games. As far as 2008 goes, the injuries on all levels make it very difficult to compare stats from one game to another. The Colts defense played several games without Hayden, without Jackson, and without Sanders in one combination or another. Perhaps the best question to ask is in the three games Indy lost without Bob Sanders, would their odds of winning have increased? If Bob Sanders plays, do the Colts still lose on a last second field goal to the Jags? If Bob Sanders plays, does the Colts defense complete fold in the fourth quarter to the Titans? Obviously, it is impossible to know, but both seem unlikely to me.Bob Sanders is a 'put you over the top' player. He's too expensive a hood ornament if you are driving a beat up 1979 Chevy Impala. But he's extra juice in the tank if you have a team that can legitimately contend for the Super Bowl. Can the Colts afford Bob Sanders if he only plays part time? As long as they pretend to be title contenders they can. We all wish that he played more. But it's only been 2 years since his return from the grave brought glory to Indianapolis. It's amazing that Kravitz's memory is so painfully short. In a year when injuries have crippled the Colts and the only hope for a long run in January is for players to come back and get healthy, questioning Bob Sanders makes little sense. The Colts aren't 'struggling' at 8-4 because they made bad roster moves (perhaps Lilja over Scott, but that has little to do with Sanders), but rather because players aren't healthy. What could Indy possibly spend money on that would add more wins when it counts than Bob Sanders? What player could possibly do what he does? Bob doesn't like the signing. Fine. Name the free agent Indy could have signed last year that would have made them a better team this year than BOB FREAKING SANDERS. The key to Kravitz error is this line:In today's NFL, nobody can afford this kind of long-term salary cap hit for a part-time player. No, Bob, in YESTERDAY'S NFL no one could afford the salary cap hit. With the salary cap era likely to come to a rapid close this year, it's hilarious that Kravitz would whine about the cap now. With the collective bargaining agreement in tatters, and the union swearing it will never allow the cap to come back, the Colts are likely entering the very last year of the salary cap in 2009. Indy will find a way under the cap next year, and after that, it probably doesn't matter any more. Kravitz is so myopic that he wrote a column ignoring both the immediate past (2006) and the immediate future (2010). Where's a rolled up newspaper when you need one? I'll have to use classifieds, because he dumped all over sports. ...

Every week in MVN Outsider's Great Debate, we take a look at different sides of an ongoing debate in the NFL. MVN Outsider writers will offer key points to support opposing perspectives on the issue, and we'll also ask a group of football bloggers to chime in with their thoughts on the matter. This week's Great Debate is: After the Giants and Titans, who is the best team in the NFL?Greg Trippiedi offers up three reasons why the Ravens are the third best team in football:NFC Teams who aren't the Giants are flawed... There are more good teams in the NFC than the number that will be allowed into the playoffs, but outside of the Giants, and those crazy Philadelphia Eagles, every team is flawed. The Bucs will have bouts of inefficent offense from time to time. The Vikings have produced very poor special teams play, and have received sub...

Three quarters of the NFL regular season have been played and we head into what should be an exciting fourth quarter. Nineteen teams are in strong contention for postseason play. The Giants, Titans, Cardinals and Broncos each have three-game leads in their divisions and are on the verge of clinching. They'll be jockeying for position in the home stretch for the best seedings. The other four division races are a lot closer. The Steelers, Jets and Vikings each have one-game leads and the NFC South is extremely close. The Panthers and Bucs are tied with 9-3 records and will face each other Monday night, with the Falcons on their heels and only a game behind them at 8-4. Here's a look at the current standings, remaining schedules and the remaining strengths of schedule. AFC division leaders: Tennessee Titans (11-1) Browns, Texans, Steelers, Colts 26-22 (.542) Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3) Cowboys, Ravens,...

With just two small words and a healthy dose of alliteration, Sean Avery may have effectively ended his own NHL career before any of his rivals--namely Dion Phaneuf--had been offered the chance. That's not to say that Phaneuf would ever adopt that kind of mindset, but when one utters the words "sloppy seconds" about your significant other, you tell me if you can keep yourself on an even keel. The master of the face-to-face screen, Avery remains suspended indefinitely by the NHL and Comissioner Gary Bettman following his hearing earlier today, with no decision handed down yet from Bettman. While Sean Avery offered an apology for his actions and came off as remorseful, representing himself as a quality player, the question is "has enough become enough already"?After all, a "good kid" as Glenn Healy called him, can only step over the line a few times before he gets labeled as a bad...
There is great excitement all over the NFL as the playoff races come into clearer focus. However, for the teams at the bottom of the NFL, there is another race going on. They are treading the thin line between playing for pride and knowing that each loss gives them a better chance at a blue chip player in the 2009 draft. Here is how the top 5 should shake up.1. Detroit Lions: Right about now the Lions would lose to a division II NCAA team. There is no doubt that they will be the team on the clock the moment the season ends. Projected finish 1-15. (0-16 just isn't possible, is it?)2. Seattle Seahawks: This draft position actually hinges on their game with the St Louis Rams. This is not how a great coach like Mike Holmgren should go out, but with his retirement already a done deal it will...

In the wake of a losing season that was capped off with an embarrassing 36-0 shutout at the hands of cross-state rivals Alabama, it was tough to imagine worse times developing for the Auburn Tigers anytime in the near future.Somehow, that's exactly what happened: the Tigers sealed their fate for the next few years, and made their future even more grim. When news broke on ESPN.com that 10-year head coach of the Auburn Tigers Tommy Tuberville was fired, I assumed the early reports were jokes, poking fun at the bipolar nature of Auburn.Minutes later, I realized the reports were legitimate and that the good 'ole Tigers really are living up to their repuation as the conference's laughing stock.Even with a handful of questionable firings around the conference and the NCAA as a whole, Auburn's postseason decision is unquestionably the most untimely, the worst in the short run and possibly the...

After all is said and done, this weekend is almost always one of the most important weekends in the College Football season. This is the weekend that some of the major conferences determine their champions. The Big 12, and SEC Championship games will take center stage, since the winners of those two games will most likely face off for the BCS National Title. But there are other Championship games that will prove to be fascinating as well.MAC Championship Game: Ball State (12-0, 8-0) vs Buffalo (7-5, 5-3)Friday, 7:00 PM ET, ESPN2var iamInit = function() {try{initIamServingHandler(234,156,323617,"http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/Resources/Css/css2.css")}catch(ex){}}()No this game won't have any National Championship implications. In fact the winner of this game probably won't even play in a BCS bowl game. However, this game has two of the biggest story book teams from this season. On the one hand, you have Ball State who has romped through their schedule, with a 12...

Wednesday night was a busy one in the NBA, and here's some teams and players that are on the move...Rising:Atlanta Hawks - Without Josh Smith, the Hawks' most complete player and best defender, the Hawks floundered after starting the season 6-0. He made his return last night against Memphis, and his presence opened up the floor for Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby, who combined to shoot over 65 percent from the field. Smith was active defensively from the start, finishing with a couple steals and a block in addition to 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in 28 minutes. The Hawks are a much better team with Smith in the lineup, and they'll need him as they prepare to tackle the Texas triangle beginning on Saturday in Dallas.Rajon Rondo - In guiding the Celtics to their league-best 18th win of the year on Wednesday, the wiry point guard got...

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Peter Gammons, who may, before all is said and done, be known as the most popular and influential baseball journalist in the history of the sport. Getting his start at the Boston Globe and spawning the Sunday Baseball Notes section of which Nick Cafardo currently pens, he has been in Sports Illustrated and ESPN and appears regularly on ESPN television programming. He is a Hall of Famer, having...

Dear Plax, Ive done some pretty stupid things in my day. .Once I decided to set off fireworks in my parent's dining room. In retrospect, that was a pretty bad idea. It cost me a long summer indoors, and that sucked. But imagine if my stupidity would have cost me $27 million dollars and potentially my freedom. Take a minute to let that sink in. One minute, I'm a 31 year old millionaire that plays a game for...

At this point, I'd link directly to their feature on El Hombre, but apprearntly they haven't figured out how to build a linkable page into their site. But if you search the site, you can read all about José Alberto Pujols Alcántara (full name). Congratulations, big guy! Thing 2: I wasn't sure where to put...
